Deaf Institute

Designed to be a multi-purpose venue on 3 floors with drinking, dining, live music, private functions and club nights on at different times of the day and week, the specification for the system had to be very flexible, with the ability to integrate and link all the equipment together across the venue.

The solution we provided included a fully integrated background music system, a live music/club set-up, a jukebox, DJ equipment, a lighting rig, video projectors & a TV system. All of this had to be operated as a whole and also individually from one floor to another.

As with most venues, there has been a slight evolution in its function over time and the system has been designed in a modular way, so as to be capable of expanding and adapting to the changing needs of the management. This has also allowed us to continually upgrade the equipment as and when new, more suitable, technology has become available.

We installed an 11.6kW Martin Audio PA into the dance hall using 4x WS2A 2×18” sub-bass speakers and 4x WT3 full-range, 15”, 3-way top boxes, which contain a 6.5” mid-range driver designed to provide exceptional vocal reproduction and presence. Loudspeaker management was provided by a Martin Audio DX1 controller and an XTA GQ600 graphic EQ was included to allow for further control of the sound. This was accompanied by a Yamaha LS9-32 digital desk and Turbosound TDX15M monitor wedges and a TXP118 active-sub drum monitor. Amplifiers were sourced from MC2 and Lab.Gruppen.

4x Martin SmartMacs were spec’d for the lighting rig giving the flexibility to use them in both the live music and club set-ups that the room is used. LED PAR cans provide flood fill for the stage and a Magnum 2500H hazer adds atmosphere. All are linked via a Zero88 lighting desk. There is also a projector with two screens allowing it to be used to project either visual effects on the back of the stage or as a stand-alone video projector with a large 3m screen installed mid-stage.

The background music system was mainly comprised from the Martin Audio AQ range of speakers, with a pair of Turbosound TCS-122/96 2-way, 12”speakers providing the necessary power required for the ground floor DJ set-up. Amplifiers were from Crown and zoner/mixer and remote controls units came from Cloud.

DJ equipment was all industry standard Technics SL1210 Mk2s, Pioneer CDJ-1000s and Pioneer DJM-600s with RCF ART310a active DJ monitors.
